Nipam Patel elected to National Academy of Sciences in 2024

Marine Biological Laboratory Director, Professor Nipam Patel (CMBCEB and Intgebio) was one of five University of Chicago scholars recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences, joining other distinguished scientists and researchers recognized for their outstanding and ongoing contributions to original research.

Patel is a preeminent figure in evolutionary and developmental biology, focusing on body patterning, segmentation, germline regeneration, and structural coloration. He is renowned for developing novel genetic model organisms that provide insights into human biology and for applying advanced imaging technologies to explore living systems.

Patel's accolades include being an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the recipient of the Schubert Endowed Chair and the William V. Power Endowed Chair at UC Berkeley, and the McKnight Scholars Neuroscience Fellowship Award. He has authored over 130 scientific publications, served as an editor for the journal Development, and remains active on several editorial and advisory boards in the biological sciences.
